Here is what I got from the President's State of the Union speech on January 23, 2007. Much of the speech was smoke and mirrors. Two items that were smoky grey were Immigration and America's energy supply.

Here is what I think the President said, without actually saying it. All illegals will be offered amnesty if they declare a desire to become American citizens. This is the one place where an all volunteer military isn't. All immigrants of the proper age, declaring a desire to become citizens, must serve in the military and they are coming across the border by the thousands every day.

After 9-11, the strategic oil reserve was raised to 727 million barrels, enough to keep things running for 57 days. The other night, the President asked Congress to double the reserves bringing the total to 1.45 billion barrels. At the same time, he encouraged that alternate fuels and technologies be developed, something every President since Jimmy Carter has called for, but never pursued, because foreign oil was abundant. I think the President suspects, or knows, that foreign oil will be far less abundant in the near future. We already have hybrid cars and those designed to run on ethanol. The use of ethanol however, is a double-edged sword. Ethanol is cheaper to produce and costs less at the pump than gasoline, but the mileage obtained from ethanol is less than with gasoline, enough so, that your costs are actually higher per mile. I think we will be seeing ethanol powered hybrids in our near future. Costs of ethanol will also be higher, because much of the corn supply is needed to feed America. Therefore, the price of ethanol and tortillas will increase dramatically. Look for big incentives to buy energy friendly cars.

So, what does all that mean? I think that President Bush knows that war with Iran and possibly Syria are unavoidable. If that is so, we will need a big increase of boots on the ground and that is where our recent immigrants will come in. The word "strategic" as in the oil supply, means this oil will be ear marked for the planes, ships, tanks and other military requirements of carrying out the war.
