At a "listening tour" stop in Long Island, N.Y. Wednesday, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and U.S. Representative Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y. author of the "Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007", called on Americans to support more citizen disarmament. A "listening tour" for Hillary means you listen while she talks. At least we no longer have to assume that she is a gun grabber.

During an interview with Rep. McCarthy, Tucker Carlson of MSNBC produced a copy of H.R.1022 and put a simple question to Rep. McCarthy: since she’s so worried about weapons with barrel shrouds, could she at least explain to the viewers what a “barrel shroud” is? Guess what! Yep, you guessed it, after evading the question the first time, she had to finally admit she had no idea. I'm surprised she didn't try to ban "magazine covers" and "speed loaders" also.

McCarthy got into politics after her husband was killed and her son seriously wounded by a gunman on the Long Island Rail Road.The fact that her husband's killer was brought to justice, wasn't enough for Mrs. McCarthy and she must now take revenge on all law abiding gun owners as well.

Mrs. Clinton made her remarks at the South Side Middle School in Nassau County. She later told several hundred kids in the summer school program about a child she recently met who accidentally shot his best friend with his father's gun. That sounds like a conveniently manufactured Clinton falsehood, but what is one more on top of the many hundreds already laid on the American people.

Not to be left out, Chuck Schumer had to also get his two cents worth in, with a bill (S .77) to stop a non-existent problem.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to repeal this law (1994 citizen disarmament) less than two years after its passage (H.R. 125 on March 22, 1996), a clear indication that while Congress supported the Omnibus Crime Bill of 1994 there was not support for this ill-conceived citizen disarmament. The House vote to repeal the Clinton citizen disarmament was 239-173, including 56 Democrats. As a result of the 1994 citizen disarmamet, gun owners removed gun grabbers from office in 1996 and replaced them with gun friendly candidates. The 2006 elections may prove to be the shortest rebound in history for any political party.

The ban has done nothing for public safety. An Urban Institute study mandated by the original law stated, "At best, the assault weapons ban can only have a limited effect on total gun murders, because the banned weapons and magazines were never involved in more than a modest fraction of all gun murders." Neither that study nor two follow-up studies by the same authors found the law to have any effect on attacks against police officers. Cities, such as Chicago, Washington DC, Detroit and Philidelphia, with the most restrictive gun laws have the highest rates of gun crime, homicide, rape and robbery. If prohibition were the answer, no one would be asking the question ... “Gun control hasn't worked as a remedy for crime. So what makes anyone think the answer is more gun control?” People who are obcessed with an issue such as gun control, animal rights, the environment, etc. are mentally ill. Obcessions are a mental illness. These people can no more admit, after nearly 20 years of failed policy, that they might be mistaken and that further restrictions can only make the problem worse. These people create false statistics and data and point to it as the gospel. Most people are either to lazy, or lack the knowledge, of how to verify the data they are being fed. Any one with a computer can call up the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports here: http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm and check the data for themselves.

So called "assault weapons" are rarely used for criminal purposes. As Chief of Police, Joseph Constance, testified before a U.S. Senate committee, "Since police started keeping statistics, we now know that assault weapons are used in an underwhelming 0.026 of 1% of crimes in New Jersey. My officers are more likely to confront an escaped tiger from the local zoo than to confront an assault rifle in the hands of a drug-crazed killer on the streets." Nationwide, less than 1% of "assault rifles" are misused, according to former B.A.T.F. Director Stephen Higgins.

Let's look at just how ridiculous some of these proposed bans are. Just below, is a Springfield Armory M1A, which was specifically exempted from the 1994 citizen disarmament, due to its popularity in high power rifle competition. It is "semi-automatic" and comes from the manufacturer with five and ten round magazines. A twenty round magazine, shown in the rifle, is optional. This rifle can only fire one bullet at a time, with each trigger pull. The term "semi-automatic" is actually a misnomer; the proper term is "self-loading" and means that rather than the operator having to open and retract the bolt, ejecting the empty cartridge and then push the bolt foward, moving a fresh cartridge from the magazine, into the chamber, then lowering the bolt handle to lock the bolt in place after each shot, it is done by the bolt moving backwards under gas pressure and then moving a new bullet from the magazine, into the chamber as it moves forward again under spring pressure. "Semi-automatic," or "self-loading" rifles and pistols have been around since the late 19th century and are no more dangerous than manually operated rifles and revolvers. It is like saying your automatic transmission is more dangerous than a manual trasmission because it shifts faster and smoother, with less effort.

Below that, is exactly the same rifle, removed from its old fashioned wooden stock and placed in an ergonomically enhanced modern stock. The new stock comes with an adjustable butt stock so that the gun can be fitted to each operator's arm length. The old fashioned wooden stock was "one size fits all" and was difficult to shoot for many operators. The "length of pull" from the end of the butt stock to the trigger was often too long, or too short, according to arm length. Where an average, to tall, man might not have a problem, many women and some shorter men, might have a problem operating the rifle. Therefore, the adjustable stock is simply an ergonomic enhancement making the gun more universally operable. The same goes for the hand grip just behind the trigger guard. It is in position to grip natually, without having to twist the wrist to fit a more horizontal stock.

Contact your Senators, and/or Representative and let them know you want these bills squashed. Let them know up front that they have a fight on their hands and that you will use your vote to remove from office those who support citizen disarmament.
